If we already know that the 2012 prophecy is not true, why do people still believe in it?
Let's face facts. The Mayan calendar may end on December 21st 2012, but the Mayans did not foresee this as the end of the world, rather, the end of a cycle. The only reason the "2012 apocalypse prophecy" exists is because the people who discovered it misinterpreted it as a doomsday prophecy. Books have been released on why the 2012 thing is as fake as Fox News. So why do people still believe in it?
Public Comments
1. who told you it was a prophecy, and why did you swallow that?
Gullibility os not a virtue
2. I think that people just take things too seriously. The media keeps upchucking the same myth, and you'll be surprised that people still take it seriously.
By the way, the Mayans see it as the end of a calendar, not a cycle.
Edit: @No Chance Without Jesus, He doesn't believe it. In fact, he explains why it isn't true. All he's asking is why people still believe it.
3. Why do people still believe in god? There is no proof nor even evidence, yet people still believe.
Many people prefer not to live in reality. So be it.
4. People will always choose to believe whatever they want regardless of any evidence for or against such beliefs. Its our nature.
5. MONEY!
6. People still believe in it as it's been rumoured, been made into a big deal and has yet to pass. For some, it's not proven until we get past 21/12/2012.
7. Conspiracy theories and similar beliefs (religion included) are rarely affected by the weight of contrary evidence. Look at the Harold Camping fiasco earlier this year.
8. Matthew 24:6
You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.
9. Stupidity and gullibility resulting in a complete lack of critical thinking skills.
10. The same reason people believe in evolution: They were brainwashed into believing it.
11. Hype.
12. I choose to believe because I plan on going on a 3 day bender from the 20th to the 22nd.
13. The 2012 future end of the world is not God's prophecy. However, God may decide to end the world then or even today.
14. some are fools....GOD SAYS SEVEN YRS AFTER RAPTURE..
15. Most people have religion which is based in superstition, not to mention that the media is as controlled as religion and propagates fear to stimulate the masses.
Look at it from the Mayans' prospective. You have a calendar system that calculates hundreds of years to come at a certain point I think they just said, 'I think we got enough years covered, let's take a break'.
16. The same people who believe the Earth will be destroyed when the Earth, Sun, and Center of the Galaxy are aligned it will signal some catastrophic event. (except that that happens EVERY YEAR)
17. It is a True Mania to believe in the End of the World. It seems to be something basic in the human mind because just as soon as the world DOESN'T end, they invent the next date that it will end. This has been going on forever.
Back in the 3rd Century AD when the young church hadn't really settled in the Rome all the way, it was found that all the christians were still standing around waiting for Jesus to come back and the end of the world... so the young church had to put out an edict which said - "get to work, jesus isn't coming today".
Perhaps all people just want to escape the pain of their lives - and certainly crazy religious people want to be "sanctified" - jesus supposedly will come back and tell them that they've been good little boys and girls and whisk them away in his loving arms to Never Never land..... Nothing sweeter than being proved RIGHT.
18. As unfortunate as this may be... people profit from this "doom and gloom" propaganda. People buy the books, get the doomsday kits, t-shirts etc. People also buy the "this is not true" books too as you suggest. It's about money, plain and simple.
