My 8yo daughter comes to tears talking about 12-21-2012......what can I say?
She heard some stuff in school over the last year, and was very upset several times. i really do not know what to say to her. I am watching the history channel's show about the Mayans and all the prophecies about the end of the world in 2012. She came in and saw some of it, got upset, and left the room, but keeps coming back after she composes herself. I explain what I understand, and answer her questions to the best of my ability, but she gets S0oooo upset to the point of tears.
I have always known her to be far more advanced in her thinking then her age. I call her my "old soul angel". It is quite clear to me NOW, that she is above and beyond any other r8yo that i have ever heard of being, and even more deep then ME! I am totally stumped here! I do not know what to say to her esp when she gets upset. Talk about 2012 will become more and more as we near the date. I am truly frightened for her. I am at a complete loss. I would like to comfort her, but do not know how.
Do you think it would be wise to get someone else to explain it to her AGE appropriately? Is there a child's version about all of this that will help her get a grasp? A book maybe? Where do I find out? who can I ask? What do I do?

1. I'm worried about dat 2. Just say that they lie and it's just a fake. Dats it
2. Your daughter is not that amazingly smart if she crys about fairy tales.
3. Tell her the truth: In the last 50 years, there have been a LOT of prophecies about the end of the world... And we are still there.
The mayans themselves did not prophetised anything. They just had to stop writing the calendar at some point. It's a cycle.
Here are some examples of failed dates:

As you can point to her, people do this all the time... ;)
4. She is not an old soul or deep, she is a little girl whose mother let her see something she isn't old enough to process.
Tell her about how some people stocked up fools in preparation for y2k, but nothing happened, and nothing will happen this time, either. It's all baloney.
5. Tell her it is a silly joke! It won't happend and if it does everyone will be together in heaven and we will have a WAY better life my oldest daughter Mallin, 5 comes to me and tells me when that day comes she wants me to hold her ALL day! It is so cute but just explain that it is just a funny joke some one made up!
6. It's truly hard to think about all that,
but that has not only been the terrifying thing that has been said in the past.
Tell her that it's just what people believe, and nobody is sure.
Life takes us on it's journey's... are ups and downs...
Nobody is truly capable of seeing the future.
When life is supposed to end it will end, not when people say it will by belief.
And if life is too short, there are too many days to spend enjoying it than waiting for it to end.
Take life as it gives it to you, and appreciate everything and everybody in it.
7. Did you tell her how it was suppose to happen multiple times already? Tell her they are just trying to build fear into everyone, and it's a scam. I'm 17, i WAS scared when i first heard about it to...
When 2012 comes by, hopefully people will finally not take the rest of these "end of the world" predictions serious. On 12-21-2012 I'll be resting just fine =)
8. Tell her it's not true? It's an old myth. Everything she sees on TV or hears about in school is just dramatization and commercialization. Tell her there's no need to worry.
It was just a prediction made several generations ago by people who were, by today's standards, quite uneducated. The Mayans also thought human sacrifice was a good way to go about things, which is obviously obsolete today. There's absolutely no reason to take this prophecy any more seriously. They were a very advanced (for their time) culture and contributed many things to society, but not all of what they said was true.
9. The thing about the 2012 predictions is that saying that they predict the end of the WORLD is a gross generalisation.
I'm not too up there on the Mayan one, but if I remember correctly it was for an end to civilisation AS WE KNOW IT!
I do know that the Nostradamus one is that humanity will be faced with a choice and depending on what choice we make we will be faced with an end to civilisation AS WE KNOW IT!
The way I interpreted that was that the world (read civilisation) as we know it WILL end and that we will have a NEW civilisation rise from the ashes of the old one.
What I am hoping is that the choice we make leads to a world without borders, one were you do not NEED paperwork to visit other countries because other countries WILL NOT EXIST! I am hoping for a world where this 'first, second and third world countries' are GONE!
I am hoping we will choose a greener, more sustainable civilisation that the one we have now.
If you view the end of the world as an end to the way things are done in this world it becomes a thing of hope and not something to be feared.
10. just tell her there is no way to know for sure when or if the world will end. these "prophecies" come around all the time in every culture and we are still here. she needs to enjoy her life and treat people as though she will see them again the next day. if she is like any other 8 year old, she'll be over it in a minute.
11. Why would you let a child believe something like that? Do you have any idea how damaging that is to a child's mentality? She can't fully comprehend the whole life cycle in the first place, letting her believe that a sky fairy is going to let the world end is not as "exciting" for her as it is for you. There have been soo many failed prophecies to begin with, and after 2012 comes and goes, there will be more. As a parent, be a parent, don't let your child believe in fairy tales.
12. They said the same thing about the year 2000 - it was supposed to be the end of the world. If you don't show fear about it, she won't. I think all of that 2012 stuff is a bunch of bullsh*t.
13. It is just a date for goodness sake. Everyone says the world is going to end every few years or so. Tell her to enjoy life and live in the present. Enjoy her friends and her family and just be a kid. It is no good to worry about when the end of the world might be. You could be gone tomorrow because you stepped out in front of a bus but that does not mean you stop living your life today.
14. Tell her we really dont know what that is all about but you doubt the world will come an end. Perhaps the writer of the calendar, that survived the ages, died and it was never finished. We just dont know. Tell her the show was some peoples ideas of what might happen not what absolutely will happen.
