2012 doomsday prophecies: yay or nay?

Personally: I thought the mayans just ran out of room on their calender: smile.

Public Comments

1. Nay.

2. All I ask is that when 12/21/12 turns out to be a nice sunny, albeit cold, day, you'll please come back and apologize for wasting our time.

Maybe THEN ya'll can go out and have a LIFE rather than awaiting a non-event that will continue to not happen

3. Nay.

4. DON'T CARE

5. I say we start calling it '2012 dumbsday'.

6. Nay I think it will be soon after this date, but no one knows the day or the hour.

7. the worlds economy will have fully collapsed descending even the most civilised societies into chaos, swine flu will have wiped out two thirds of the worlds population, the rest will die in the impending nuclear holocaust culminating with the huge solar flare that engulfs the earth when the sun aligns with the centre of the galaxy..................
or
maybe itll be a normal day where i get to feel really old as my daughter will turn 17.....mmmmmmmmmmm???

8. The people who promote this are anti-Christian and anti scientific too. It is a fraud for money, they wish to sell worthless survival books, videos and other material, or to get you into "religious" cults where they can get all of your money and life. Some promote it as a sort of joke, others are deluded.

Planet X was invented by Nancy Lieder about 1994. She claimed she was abducted by aliens and warned that a planet that she calls X would damage the Earth in 2003. She started a web site called Zetatalk where she spread the word about this and I think she wrote a couple of books. Zetatalk is still on the net.

Sometime in the 1960s or 1970s a character called Zecharia Sitchin falsely claimed to have translated ancient cuneiform tablets which told him that the Earth was invaded in ancient times by Annunaki, who created humans by crossing themselves with Earth apes. The idea was to make humans work for them, mostly mining gold. This is actually a distortion of the Sumerian creation myth.

These Annunaki live on a planet called Nibiru which has an elliptical orbit round the Sun and is in the inner solar system every 3600 years, giving them the chance to hop across to Earth. Sitchin claimed it will be next in the inner solar system in 2085. In ancient times Nibiru was the name of Jupiter or sometimes Mercury among the Mesopotamians.

Maybe 25 years ago archaeologists managed to decipher the Mayan inscriptions. They found a number of different calendars the Mayans used including a "long count" of days that started in August 3114BC, which was long before the Mayans had a civilisation. Because of their peculiar counting and belief systems, the long count ends on 21 or 23 December 2012. This is about as significant as a car distance meter going from 999,999 to 000,000, and the Mayans did not attach any prediction to this except perhaps party time with plenty of maize porridge and chokoes for all. You can keep both as far as I'm concerned.

According to traditional European astrology, we are about to enter the "Age of Aquarius", but the astrologers cannot agree on the year. Some said it was in the 1960s, others say not for another 100 years or so. So 2012 is in the midst of the excpected range of dates so it might as well be then as any other time.

Some woo-woo writers like Jose Arguelles got on to the end of the "long count" and stated predicting big things for 2012. Nothing very nasty, by the way, but that does not sell. Disaster and fear sells as shown by the rapture cult within Christianity. So others grabbed the idea and ran away with it, predicting all sorts of different disasters in 2012. They also grabbed Sitchin's Nibiru, but he still says 2085 as far as I know.

When Nancy Lieder heard about this she transferred her failed 2003 planet X prediction to 2012. You can keep selling books, videos and making money out of lecture tours that way.

All the stuff about planetary alignments is false. There will be no alignment of planets in December 2012. Even if there was, we would not notice unless we were looking at them.

Galactic alignments are likewise nonsense. The Earth, Sun and the galactic centre come vaguely close to an alignment twice every year, but it is several degrees off. Even if it was spot on, we still would not notice unless we were looking.

Stories of our solar system crossing the galactic central plane are false too. As far as is know, this solar system crossed the plane 3 million years ago and we will not see it again for another 30 million years. Again, we would not notice unless we were looking for it.

All the rest about Revelation, Nostradamus, the I Ching, the Bible codes, asteroids, the Chinese calendar, the (mythical) photon belt are either deliberate misinterpretations or flat lies.

9. Well you see in September 2008 Obama is supposed to be assasinated. So Hilary Clinton is going to take over and become the President. Well I think like December 2008 not sure Hilary is going to welcome in the AntiChrist. He will go around slaughtering Christians.

I dont remember where I got that from...some site.

10. Well, people have been predicting the end of the world since at least 2800 BC:

So far they have always been wrong, and there's no reason to believe the current 2012 predictions are any more accurate. And excellent reason to believe they are pure unadulterated hogwash.
