Why do people believe this doomsday 2012 crap?

I understand why people believe in certain religions that make them feel good or comfortable. But why in whomever's name do so many people believe in all these doomsday prophecies?

Public Comments

1. Because they're stupid.

2. They're viral marketers hired by those 2012 movie people. All this has just been a gigantic advertising campaign.

3. These are the same people who rushed to Costco to stock up on supplies before Y2K, and the same people who will probably die of asphyxiation after wrapping their houses in plastic wrap.

4. because they are retarded!they are really stupid

5. Who knows

6. No one believes that crap

7. The same reason people believe in evolution, and global warming. They start brainwashing children at a very young age in school.

8. well...the mayans had a huge understanding of astronomical events..things they should not have had knowledge of by today's standards. Its basically where science does mess up. Its arrogance. Scientist and historians and archaeologists come in and state that an ancient civilization of a certain time..would only have certain set of intelligence..and then they dig up calendars that should be by they're timeframe and estimates way to complicated for that said civilization. When in reality..if they would set that arrogance aside and realize that there are many ancient cultures who could have been waaay more intelligent then us, it wouldn't seem so crazy when they find something that agrees with that. So basically you have the mayans, and ancient culture, that should not have been so intelligent..and they had this calendar that predicted astronomical things basically better than we can today, and that calendar stops on dec 12 2012. Why? because the mayans saw that astronomically all the planets would line up in a straight line and point to some significant point in the universe...I think its andromenda if I'm not mistaken..but I'm not sure on that...so maybe look that part up for yourself? and I will too and if i find it..I will come back and post it. but anyway..back to point...so, the planets line up and point in a certain direction..the mayans called this a time of change, or understanding, something basically to that extent. and from there came all these theories on pole shift and the earth's crust shifting, and gravitational problems the list goes on and on and on..none of which are found in the mayan calendars or writings for that matter. But there is something significant that will happen on that date...as the calendar predicts...but it doesn't mean the world is ending. And they're calender ending doesn't then either. who knows..we know the civilization scattered after a certain time period..maybe when they scattered they no longer continued they're calendar? but thats why people believe in it, that why there are all these prophecies....it does have some signifigance, there are great astronomical things at that time happening, and the mayans did have a huge understanding of astronimical things...for way beyond they're times. So thats basically why people believe this stuff.

9. I don't think any of them really do.

One of several Mayan calendars is the Long Count calendar, which is reset to day 0 every 1,872,000 days or 7057.5 years. The next reset date, by some calculations, is December 21, 2012. This is not a prediction of the end of the world.

These predictions are scare tactics, conspiracy theories, and chances to make money from books and movies.

Ever since the Y2K and 6/6/6 (June 6, 2006) End of the World scenarios did not pan out, the scare mongers, conspiracy theorists, book sellers, and television executives have been touting the 2012 End of the World scenario. When 2012 does not happen either, I am sure they will think of something else.

"But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come." (Mark 13:32-33)

Jesus told us in no uncertain terms that we were not to know when the end of the world would come but that we were always to be ready.

The early Christian Church thought that Jesus was going to return at any moment. Only after a couple of centuries did the Church realize that it may be 2,000 or 4,000 or 8,000 years before Jesus returns.

The Catholic Church wisely follows Jesus' advice and teaches that each of us should live as if we will meet our maker in the next ten minutes and that we need to work to make the world a better place for our 100 X great-grandchildren.

Do not worry about the end of the world. Trust God to make sure everything happens to plan. Just be ready to meet God at any time.
